It’s so commonly thought that stress is the cause of so many of our problems. However, we may ask, what is ‘stress’ and what if ‘stress’ was merely a myth?
What is Stress
Fundamentally, we may say that ‘stress’ is merely a subjective construct. It’s a ‘nominalisation’ or ‘fuzzy’ noun. It’s just an excuse. It’s generally considered to be the symptoms that we experience if we perceive that a demand exceeds our ability to cope. However, we may say that it’s ‘resistance’ to embracing reality and furthermore it’s actually a ‘myth’.
The Stress Myth
As Dr Serge Doublet, Ph.D. says in his book; ‘The Stress Myth’, it wasn’t till the 1950s that stress was adopted as a medical term. Before then, no one spoke of stress. It wasn’t even considered as a problem. Yet after Dr Selye introduced the notion, increasingly, everyone started complaining about it. Also, Andrew Bernstein, the author of ‘The Myth of Stress’ questions the validity of the concept. He also suggests that more specifically, stress is merely created by a particular kind of thought that we’ve adopted.
Stress Solutions
The key to resolving what we perceive as ‘stress’ is to learn how to embrace the experience for what it really is. Then, rather than holding on to ‘resistance’ learning how to be more responsible for how we deal with things. To handle this we need to change our perception and enhance our ability to adapt to the many and varied circumstances in our life.
