Special Spring Celebrations

As folklore tells us, spring is the special season that reflects renewal, rejuvenation, rebirth, regrowth and resurrection. It’s that refreshing time of year when we awaken from the doldrums of winter and step out into a refreshing new world. For many, it’s their favorite season, as nature comes alive again, as we re-open the windows, enjoy exploring outdoor activities, with the the birds tweeting and with the scent of the blooming flowers.

Seasonal Correspondences

As an analogy, we may say that spring is akin to the morning. In many ancient cultures, where mankind was more in-tune with nature, spring was clearly regarded as the true start of the new year. If we were truly to honor our nature, by being in-tune with nature we also would be regarding spring as the beginning of the new year. Hence, just as how we start each day sets the rhythm for how the day will unfold, likewise spring is about how we can make a great start for the solar year ahead. Consider how you choose to celebrate at this most significant time. The choices we make at springtime may well set the path of how our life unfolds for the year ahead. Spring is the time of inspiration, re-connect with spirit and become revitalised.

According to the timeless, ancient wisdom of Traditional Oriental Medicine, spring corresponds to the element of ‘wood’ which relates to the liver organ and to the free flow of upward Chi. Springtime is also known, traditionally as the season to cleanse and detox. You’ve probably heard of the term ‘spring-clean’. Detoxification is one of the most popular buzzwords in the health and wellness scene now-a-days. However, detoxification is actually only one of the most important functions of the liver.

Liver Basics

Many don’t realise that our liver is one of our most important organs. To find where it is, place your hand on the right-side of your abdomen, just below your ribs. It’s actually, the largest organ inside your body, about the size of a rugby ball. Amongst many things, it helps to cleanse our blood of various waste products, hormones, drugs and many other toxins. It also helps to break down hormones and old blood cells, stores and releases sugars and fat, produces essential proteins, including blood-clotting factors and enzymes, aids digestion, stores and supplies many nutrients as as the body needs them.

Although our liver has great regenerative abilities, it can still become damaged. There’s many liver conditions or diseases that can accumulate from a poor lifestyle. All of these can in turn somehow affect our liver function and hence our over-well wellbeing. Some of the most common conditions are fatty-liver disease, hepatitis and cirrhosis. It’s suggested, just as we’re all unique, so is our individual liver function. We really need to appreciate just how crucial good liver functioning really is. As our liver performs so many critical functions, we must take good care of it.

Liver Wellness

If you’ve been looking for ways to improve your well-being, maybe to get rid of brain fog, sluggishness or excess weight, you’ve likely come across the concept of a liver cleanse or detox. These terms may conjure up images of a clogged filter that needs to be simply cleaned. However a good functioning liver needs much more than this.

Traditionally, spring is that special season to take care of our liver. I suggest to gain good liver health, we need to embrace a ‘holistic’ perspective. Just as we are a part of nature, we need to find ways to reconnect with nature and reclaim our true, natural self. Be aware of the traps of the modern 21st century. Today’s crazy world can cause us to be exposed to so much pollution. Also we can be subjected to the harmful effects of various technologies. Also, if we’re tired, yet overstimulated, it can overwhelm us.
