In clinic, I see many clients who complain of feeling fatigued. In my opinion, don’t fight fatigue, you won’t win. Instead, we need to work with it. To get results, essentially we need to boost our vitality. And, to achieve this we need to embrace a few simple concepts. Acknowledging our body in terms of ‘bio-energetics’ helps. Simply speaking, we need to work with fatigue and help it get better. To do this we need to learn how to tune to better tune into our body. We need to practice the art of applying appropriate stimulus and response dynamics. And, then cultivating our ‘jing’. Lets discuss these in more detail.
How to boost Your Vitality
Essentially, the answer to overcoming fatigue is to boost our vitality. Interestingly, it seems that the western medical model doesn’t really have a great grasp on the concept of vitality. Just the usual vital signs tests merely determines if we’re alive and functional. Yet, there’s various more alternative ways of assessing our ‘aliveness’. The measure our of vitality may also be seen as a way to help evaluate our level of ‘aliveness’
Bio-Energetics
Rather than looking at our body from a western medical model as a machine we need to turn around our perspective. We need to look at our body more in terms of energy. Even, modern western physiology acknowledges that at our cellular level, we produce energy. It’s called ‘ATP’. In a nutshell, bio-energetics is the modern day western medical concept of how we produce energy. We may say that it’s the equivalent of what the eastern model calls ‘Chi’ or ‘Qi’. To build this we need to learn the art of applying appropriate ‘stimilus and response dynamics’.
Stimulus and Response Dynamics
There may be many underlying causes of fatigue. However, it may be said that the main cause is inappropriate stimulus and response dynamics. Simply put, we’re often doing the wrong thing at the wrong times. Hence, we need to learn the art of applying most appropriate sort of exercise to strengthen and tonify our physiology rather than weaken it. Also, essentially we need to also learn when and how to rest. As we apply these principles we may then ‘recharge our batteries’ so to speak. This is the eastern equivalent to cultivating our ‘jing’.
The Jing Thing
in traditional oriental medicine, ‘jing’ is often described as our vital essence. It basically represents our internal strength, endurance and resilience. To put it another way, we may say the amount of wax that’s left on a candle. If the flame burns too brightly, the wax melts away quicker. Likewise, if we happen to overexert ourself, especially if often, then we deplete our ‘jing’. Basically, to stay younger longer, we need to learn the art of replenishing our jing.
